  • The way I heard it, and it changed my life, was “All advice is autobiographical.” You have to filter it through your opinion of the person, how self aware they are, and how much you think they’re sincerely trying to think of you when giving advice.

Edit: And, yes, every time I see this discussed there are droves of snarky people thinking they’re being so clever by pointing out the “irony” which I think is really just reflecting their cynicism. Social skills require nuance and understanding that no rule can be applied 100%.

  • The fantastic book series Magic Kingdom For Sale is basically about this. I started reading what I assumed would be a lighthearted comedy and it literally opens with our main character lost in alcoholic depression because of an awful tragedy. The fantasy land he’s sent to is hostile, but it provides him enough hope to fight for a better world there.

I would add that what OP stated is built into the reason as well. It’s an okay episode, the main problem being that you had to accept the ridiculous premise of talking entirely in memes. Fast forward a decade and the joke very much is that it’s not as ridiculous as it first seemed.

  • Perhaps, but also how much of that love depends on the ‘loved ones’ acting in a way that is wanted/expected vs loving them for who they are? How many of these people see their love as transactional, like withdrawing college funding if the kid declares an undesired major?

Loving someone as an extension of yourself is an entirely different thing for a narcissist.
