The problem with Strange New Worlds to me is the budget and the number of episodes.
Budget, too high. Number of episodes, too low.
Every star trek has their stinky episodes but when you only have 10 episodes per season, 3 stinky episodes is a 30% stinky show.
Also, the budget being so high allows writers to take a siesta and let the effects team take over for a bunch of oooh ahhh laser spectacles. I have that complaint for the end of Deep Space Nine and Enterprise too. In TNG and TOS era, they had less budget and ability to do effects so the writing had to be excellent since most of the show was people standing on the bridge and talking or sitting around a table and talking.
So Paramount/WB, spend less money, spend all you have on writers and makeup and try a new star trek set directly post-undiscovered-country. Follow a Klingon ship that is pissed about their government being dishonorable and wants to forge their own way. Start the show with the attack on Khitomer. Game of thrones-lite Klingon-Romulan-Federation political intrigue. Cameos of the occasional TNG character at Starfleet academy or whatever. Enjoy the billion dollars WB/Paramount. Not that youll need it as one of the 3 remaining media conglomerates left.
Maybe I missed something in the article, but what is the title even talking about? What’s the “winning formula” it mentions? What’s being rewritten?

Weirdest fucking thing I’ve ever seen a show attempt. I can’t say it was a success, it was a bit of a train wreck, but not as bad as what I was expecting.
Yeah…I think Collider has fallen pretty far in terms of the way they write their articles and headlines - I assume it’s the brief mention about how season five has “essentially no genre hopping,” per Akiva Goldsman.

Me, too. It was especially welcome after that Discovery debacle. That’s the only series I didn’t finish. I got 2.5 seasons in. Awful.
Agreed, I’ve had a lot of fun watching this series, including season 4. I can understand why some people don’t like it, but I really appreciate the silliness with this series.
Same! I like the silly! The musical ep was amazing. The party planet was fun! It’s the closest thing we’ve had to TOS since S1 TNG. And by far the best live action Trek since TNG. Don’t fucking let them turn it in to another Discovery or 90210 in space!

I checked out at the musical. From what I see, it got much worse. Get real writers.
I checked out at “good and evil are fundamental forces and your goodness is in your genes”, after skipping the Vulcan minstrel show and being weirded out by the race/species essentialism.
You can’t bail because of a musical episode, every show does a musical episode. It gives their best singers a chance to show a talent that is hidden from the world, and personalizes them a little. Some of the cast are excited by it, and others are terrified and dread it, especially when they hear how good some are. The Greys Anatomy one is legendary for how bad it is.
SNW’s show was pretty meh, but was saved only because La’an was amazing, and then Uhura stepped up and was MIND-BLOWING. Absolutely incredible singer.
I agree. Silly / stupid stuff had an awesome place to live (Lower Decks), always landed poorly for me in SNW. The show lost me early season 3.

Look I thought SNW was pretty good in the first 2 seasons, but whatever 3 and 4 have been is not what I’d call a ‘winning’ formula.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan, not a hater. I don’t hate-watch TV. I’m here to have a good time and I’m gonna have a good time.
But I miss “normal” episodes. Almost every episode in season 3 was “SNW does _____”. Either a spoof or a remake. It’s great to do that once or twice. They could easily get away with that many in a traditional 26-episode season. But when you only have 10 episodes you need more focus.

Completely agree. The closest they came to a decent episode was the kirk-centred TOS-themed episode. Foolishly, I thought that they’d pulled out of the nosedive… but we had more fairytale nonsense and space baby.
Fairytale nonsense that fit right in with TOS’ space Abraham Lincoln, a giant green hand, Greek gods, and the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.
And yet presented cartoonishly without any of the sixties psychedelic surrealism. Plus, generally episodes like The Savage Curtain are widey derided as being among the worst TOS episodes. For me they have a quirky charm (but willing to accept that’s just nostalgia at work and they were just shit). I also wouldn’t be so grumpy about this if Once La’An a Time was the only silly episode this season. Unfortunately…
Being physically unable to watch something seems like a medical concern. Might be worth looking into.

Shame to see they’re ending the best of the live action Trek shows in the new lot, but here’s hoping someone decent picks it up and we get a return to form for Star Trek.
