Thank you all for letting me wake-up this morning to find even more future friends have joined our little community. At last count it was only 30 users now we have over 80!
Since the last update we’ve been approved for our OpenCollective initiative. Where you lovely users can ensure that reddthat stays online for as long as the funding allows. All of our funding goals are currently there as well as our stretch goal of paying our moderation and administration team for their hard work.
We’ve reached another milestone in that we have now federated with over 310 different instances. That means there 310 different other servers out there that we are connecting too and sharing posts with!
Thank you all, and remember the human!

New here and to the fediverse, but getting the hang of it and really excited! Thank you for creating this instance.

Glad you’ve found a home here!
Still getting the hang of this stuff but I’m digging it and excited for the growth. Signed up with reddthat based on ease of access. I get the need to weed out spammers but didn’t want to fill out a questionnaire.
Welcome!
I’m glad our current choices allowed you to find a home here.
As a brief reminder, if you don’t fill in your email address you won’t be able to do a forgot-my-password. So it’s up to you!
For the moment there hasn’t been any spammers, just people enjoying their time which is great to see.
Cheers!
I’m curious to know more about the budget and how you calculate the general hosting costs
O/
The details are hidden under the goals on our open collective. But I’ll also give you some background. I’ve purchased a server which costs just under $120AUD per year. I got a great deal as all my other infrastructure is actually with the same hoster and we have a great relationship.
Currently Lemmy, the software we are using, is very CPU & memory efficient. This allows us (& other instances) to not worry too much regarding resources. The biggest bottleneck is actually the database server and how Lemmy interacts with it. The Lemmy devs have noted this and are working on it.
My plans for the future are 3 fold:
- Get some people who are interested in helping moderate our communities.
- Buy another 1-3 boxes and scale out database & the application. This will allow for HA and increased resources. (This is the price for the stretch goal New Hardware)
- our future goal is to allow us to pay our moderators at around A$20/hour capped at a certain amount per month.
Cheers!
Thank you for the detailed response! That makes me a bit more confident in the long term viability of the node
Yeah we are not going anywhere for another 12 months at least, and our costs are minimal to break even.
We are already 20% of the way to being funded, from 1 donation! It works out to be $10 per month, or 3 small coffees per month!
So becoming community funded is only a matter time.
If you jump on our open collective page this should all be written down… but we shall make an announcement in the coming days with all this information as well.
Cheers!
