The training for the models still requires massive data centers, ai has caused data center power usage to double in the last five years, and wasting power on stealing art is still wasting power even if you reduce it down to just running a local model on your gaming pc, which is a tiny fraction of users.

The personal impact is the artist that does not want their art used this way. In this case the artist has made it incredibly clear that ai is a cancer on society and an affront to human life. I think that would affect a normal person that has any shame or empathy.

Listen, not all nazi soldiers were particularly bad. I’m sure a chef in the rear guard probably did not do a single war crime. But when the SS existed we know that the chef isn’t what most people refer to when discussing war crimes of the era.

Its the same in this era. Sure, there are bad guys all over the place, but compare to the US there’s really only a handful of entities in the post WWII era that could be equals, and none more evil.

  • …you understand how tiny of an industry that is compared to nearly anything else china exports, right?

And the entire world is going towards evs, even developing countries since generators are more efficient over time than dealing with all the parts of a ice vehicle.

Some businesses might go under if they somehow can’t pivot their floors to produce something more profitable, but the entire ‘problem’ western firms have when competing with china is that they’re set up to easily pivot and expand production to different items.

  • Every work from home person and every corporate end point will be upgrading; simply due to legal liability for the corporations. That alone is hundreds of millions of pcs and laptops getting thrown out (because anyone in IT knows no corpo is going to pay the extra hours to recycle properly).

Average users with no liability? Plenty will stay on win 10 until their use case no longer works, i.e. when steam dropped win vista compatibility, but plenty will be scared enough to upgrade.

The weird part will be seeing who sidegrades to a tablet in the corporate environment. Many android tablets can do everything needed for office work, and don’t have the same security cross section. Most app front ends are electron anyway these days so its not like x86 is needed.
