News@lemmy.world•59-year-old Sunnyvale woman detained by ICE at airport in New York
2·18 days agoHeartbreaking to hear about regular people being treated like this. It’s shameful for authorities to treat anyone like this, let alone a nonviolent mother with medical needs.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Looking for selfhosted alternative to "Find my phone"English
8·26 days agoI use Dawarich on my server and Colota as the app on my phones. It is quite good but has some minor shortcomings with multiple devices and being able to see previous routes ONLY FOR THE ACCOUNT YOU’RE LOGGED INTO (so not family member phones) but is fine for live location for all devices. Also you use a browser to track location instead of an app which is a minor annoyance.
I had been using Traccar and liked that but after moving to GrapheneOS, the Traccar client would not stay running in background.
I tried FMD-FOSS and couldn’t get it to fully work. This serves a different purpose than those listed above and I ended up not really needing it.
I tried all of the other popular options and even linking one to Nextcloud and didn’t care for them or couldn’t get them to work. Reitti and GPS Logger worked but I prefer Dawarich and Colota.

301·28 days agoIt’s easy enough for anyone willing try. Grab any Pixel from the last few years, plug it in to a computer, and click buttons in your web browser on the GOS website and watch GOS get installed on your phone. The instructions hold your hand the whole way through.

2·28 days agoDon’t put in a duress code that wipes the device and you’ll be fine. I generally agree with you tho as I’m on GOS too.

2·2 months agoNice. I’d like to change Linux distros on my server but the main thing holding me back was all my containers, sidecars, reverse proxies, etc. If I could easily back up and restore that would be amazing.

Technology@lemmy.world•Majority of Americans support banning social media for kids under 16English
162·2 months agoEven if altruistic, your proposal to “ban it” is not consistent with free and open societies.
Also do you realize what we’re communicating on now can be considered social media. Should this be banned too?
“I don’t like xyz; ban it.” – that’s the same reasoning that ends up banning prolific books to “keep us safe.”

News@lemmy.world•Seven more sentenced to prison over protest outside Texas detention center
2·2 months agoFor those of you not aware of details like me, here’s a summary. One of the protestors shot a cop with an AR-15. I can’t see a proper justification as to why the rest of them received such harsh sentences though.
After a three-week jury trial, the nine activists were all found guilty of a slew of criminal charges in March, stemming from a Fourth of July protest at an immigrant detention facility in Alvarado, Texas, south of Fort Worth. The demonstrators arrived late at night with a plan to set off fireworks as part of a noise demonstration to show solidarity with those detained inside. A few of the protesters spontaneously broke off from the main group and vandalized cars in the parking lot, a guard shack, slashed the tires on a government van and broke a security camera. When a police officer arrived on the scene and drew his weapon, one of the activists fired an AR-15, hitting the officer in the shoulder. The officer survived.
Nope not me. The masses just must be demanding it! 🙃
Does the update allow viewing tracks/routes for family member devices?
The workaround I’ve employed is simply logging into my wife’s account and her logging into mine to see detailed info, but if we had kids or more family members then it would be nice to get full tracks/routes and not only live location.
I set this up a week or two ago and have been quite pleased besides this hiccup. Thanks for all of your hard work!
(Also, for anyone curious I do like Colota on Android for the device tracking portion to accompany Dawarich.)
Does the new Dawarich mobile app show family member location now? Do you have plans for that? Visiting a web page on mobile isn’t ideal :)

8·2 months agoCan someone post the full article in a comment? I tried workarounds to read the full article but nothing worked.

Scrolled down many comments to find yours!
OsmAnd has built-in address lookup and Comaps (and most others I tried) does not.
I would honestly rather use Comaps than OsmAnd, but having to find the longitude and latitude of an address using a different website and then plugging that into Comaps was way too much work. (And the address wasn’t always found anyway.)
I would gladly pay for a Google Maps alternative but I recently tried Magic Earth and was unimpressed and didn’t find it worth paying for.
