Outside of specific implementations like Tor’s snowflake protocol, it’s very easy for internet providers to see who’s using a VPN, the only thing it buys you is privacy at the other end (so they’ll know you’re using a VPN, just not know what you’re using the VPN to look at, hence why their panties are in a twist).

I mean, “You’re a mean one, Mr. Assface” still works despite being more of an insult than a proper name

politics @lemmy.world•Republicans "on board" with Pam Bondi impeachment—Ro Khanna
20·1 month agoYup, plus it normalizes the action of starting to hold people accountable. If you get to the point where you’re regularly impeaching the corrupt bozos in this administration, it’s more likely that some of them will stick with convictions.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox Will Ship with an "AI Kill Switch" to Completely Disable all AI Features - 9to5LinuxEnglish
9·1 month agoLadybird I follow since it’s an entirely new browser engine and can help restore a little democracy to the web, but why Floorp? I’m looking through its website and it seems to be a more customizable Firefox, which is nice, but doesn’t seem particularly revolutionary (and forks of Chromium/Firefox are kinda a dime a dozen).

Technology@lemmy.world•In wake of Windows 10 retirement, over 780,000 Windows users skip Win 11 for Linux, says Zorin OS developers — distro hits unprecedented 1 million downloads in five weeksEnglish
102·2 months agoI jumped in to the Win11 beta and really liked it, they finally got most of the control panel into the new settings architecture and I never once had to dig deep into things to adjust something small, a lot of stuff that took finagling just worked.
And now I fucking hate it. The release version is jammed so full of bullshit features and useless AI junk that it is an active hindrance to whatever I’m trying to do. And more and more stupid fucking bugs bubble up in to the desktop and never get addressed, all while I get pop up after pop up urging me to try some bullshit new feature.
I already had one foot into Linux with my desktop but kept this because it was a Surface and nice at some point, but my next buy has to be a Linux 2-in-1, I can’t deal with Microsoft’s horseshit any longer.
I do want to emphasize that for the moments that it was unadulterated by rent-seeking, the new Win11 actually was kinda great.

politics @lemmy.world•Democrats reach deal to end government shutdown before Thanksgiving: report
10·3 months agoOh, yes, I’m sure they’ll follow through on their pinky promise to be civil like they have every other time in history when they get the chance to dig in. And I’m also sure that Trump will happily not veto a democratic bill to make an example or anything.
I’ll name them, though I don’t condone violence since that almost always martyrs them and makes things worse. Just will be happy when they die of old age or McDonald’s.

News@lemmy.world•Swalwell: When we’re in majority, ICE masks coming off
7·4 months agoICE has a purpose but the existing organization now has rot to the core and needs to be fully razed to the ground and rebuilt or replaced with a different organization. Any continuation of any existing project or individual’s employment there is the equivalent of trying to find the good people in the brownshirts. They’ll just lie until they get the chance to abuse and torture people to their heart’s content again.

I think they mean heat-canning/jarring, which sterilizes it and destroys a lot of the probiotics in it to make it shelf-stable. Room temp sauerkraut is still good for you, just not as good as the less-processed stuff that requires refrigeration.
