Technology@lemmy.world•Consumers are paying more than ever for streaming TV each month and analysts say there’s no reason for the companies to stop raising pricesEnglish
19·2 years agoStreaming services, digital services in general, should be made to compete on having the best platform, not on exclusive content.
It’s all the same wires going to the same machines. Internationally, too. I can see maybe allowing for different pricing for countries with very different wage levels, but if it’s online, it should be available everywhere.

1·2 years agoWindows 7 is my last Windows. Windows 10 is my current Windows. Looks like a safe bet to keep skipping at least one version. I did also go from XP to 7.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•YouTube's anti-adblock rollout has finally arrived for Firefox usersEnglish
3·2 years agoI might agree if Google had nothing to do with YouTube. But since it’s theirs, I would only be worried about individual content creators and archivists, and they’d be better off with a support mechanism not controlled by Google. The ones not already raking it in with Google’s, I mean.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit no longer links your content when they ban you, and you can only appeal once
6·2 years agoAppeal rejected, but familiarize yourself with the content policy for future reference?
I imagine they’re banning people all over the place now, I got banned from a sub for talking about apartheid in Israel a while ago.

1·2 years agoCopyright only exists to serve society, to promote the creation of content. It’s not about restricting anything, other than as far as it helps more people create, more creation happen. Corporations stomping on individuals does not promote creation.

2·2 years agoWe should worry more about what corporations are doing with people’s work, than what individuals are doing with what they’ve paid for.
Or simply, if someone’s profiting off of someone else’s work, then worry about the rules.

Climate@slrpnk.net•EU Parliament passes law requiring 42.5% of EU energy to be renewable by 203031·2 years agoSuch a waste not supporting nuclear power since decades ago.
Shouldn’t have renewable energy targets, but deadlines for shutting down all coal power plants, then oil, and production of fossil fuel vehicles, then a cap on the amount of natural gas that can be used.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Biden says global warming topping 1.5 degrees in the next 10 to 20 years is scarier than nuclear war24·2 years agoOf course. Climate change is happening, and will keep getting worse until all the biggest countries agree to do and actually go through with doing something substantial about it (or to fully isolate the economies of those that refuse). Nuclear war is just an idea.
Yes, a whole lot of people work hard, and don’t get meaningfully compensated for it. But it’s not about people on small amounts of welfare vs. the working poor (who also might be on welfare), that’s not where you’re going to find the wealth that’s been stolen.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•You can change the spelling of one word in the English language to match how they are pronounced. What word do you pick?
16·2 years agoI think the main issue with this is that pronunciation changes over time, in addition to varying by area. So if we keep changing the spelling, written works will became unreadable faster.
But I would suggest that any band names that use umlauts/foreign letters should be pronounced accordingly.
The world has resources, countries have public resources or resources that should be publicly owned, like every source of energy. It shouldn’t be difficult to have a built-in buffer that means everyone’s going to be okay, from public sources of income.
And no child chooses to be born. The world even complains that not enough people are being born, demanding more. Bringing children into the world should mean responsibilities, not just for the parents, but the society that insists on it.
I think at this point it should be 3 six-hour days per week. 100+ years of technological progress increasing productivity, and the number of people’s needs that can be covered by the same amount of work.

They say if you don’t pay, you’re the product, but that’s obviously bullshit, paying solves nothing. The saying should be never trust corporations.
