I work with a ton of immigrants and some I have known for for 20 years. The thought of losing them is just painful.

I only print docs and pictures. But in my opinion printing on Linux is largely better than Windows. It just works most of the time. And if there is an issue the solution is generally restarting the job.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Any immutable distros like Chrome OS? (Desktop part of the project)
3·2 years agoEndless Os is solid! It’s my go to for ppl who don’t know jack about Linux. But it’s also just a really well put together distro.
My favorite feature by far is just Auto updates. It’s the only distro I’ve used where Auto updates just work. Everything stays updated zero tweaks required no interruption of workflow. It’s honestly so good at it that I forget that it even updates. And that doesn’t just go for the OS that goes for apps too.
It also runs well on just about any hardware I’ve ever put it on. I just put it on my buddy’s Toshiba satellite laptop that’s rocking an I5 4200u and a 5400rpm hard drive. Takes a second to boot but doesn’t miss a beat once it’s up and running.
It is very flatpak centric but if you’re looking for that Chrome OS feel it’s about as close as you can get.

Books@lemmy.ml•Looking up words on digital dictionary slows me down, does it get better?
21·2 years agoAs a native English speaker I have to look up words all the time. One of the best and worst things about English as a language is that it’s actually constantly evolving. It also takes words from other languages and authors have a penchant from just making up words depending on what type of literature you read. I wouldn’t worry so much about reading fast. I understand it can be frustrating. But sometimes words being a mystery is part of the experience. I read a lot of sci-fi and there’s a lot of times that authors will just simply make up a word or concept. There can be an etymology for it based on some sort of like Sumerian text or random stuff like that. So don’t stress it
What phone you get. It’s sound like a Samsung have you seen if there is custom ROM you can run? https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/#samsung
Also a lot of services like Location Protocol, google services frame, downloads manager, contacts. Are necessary for your phone to work at all. Turning them off and on when using them would destroy your battery.
I have those apps too. I’m just saying I have never had this issue. I am not saying it’s not legit it’s just strange.
I also don’t use any social media besides lemmy so that might also play a factor. And I block A LOT of ips on my phone.
Yall have to have some shady apps I have never had this issue. Apps starting on boot is not normal

15·2 years agoHow in all that’s holy did they not think of this the first time. Like bro do y’all need that ad revenue that bad?
One thing I want to debate about this is I remember how expensive cable used to be. It was like 120 bucks. Maybe you got like a $70 package or $80 package where you had barely any channels. I ain’t spending that much on streaming services!! I don’t know if I’m an outlier but I got Three and that’s about it. I pay around 40 bucks a month.
Why you don’t like Wayland would be a more interesting post.
Hey we all have our unix philosophy cringe phase. Just let the kid play he will grow up one day.
I didn’t say it was hard just said flatpaks are easy. Also why don’t you post a solution?
I would uninstall and use the flatpak. Way easier than solving dependencie issues
So his Meme is correct the system will break if you force it to uninstall something?

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 11 has made the “clean Windows install” an oxymoron | Op-ed: PC makers used to need to bring their own add-on bloatware—no longer.English
131·3 years ago18 years of running linux on my computers because windows is insufferable in some way or form. Windows 11 Pro was actually fairly decent at first I even liked the UI despite its issues. Then updates broke and even digging into the cmd prompt tools couldn’t fix it. Which is just insane to me as a company that is hoovering up my data cant figure out updates. I dont even care all that much about the privacy aspect if it just worked. Hell its why I use google services. But every version of windows I have used since XP has had some sort of fatal error that could only be fixed with a clean install. When that happens its my sign to go on a distro hop.
Dark patterns have also just become the norm in Windows and Mac OS. Honestly kind of sad because both OS’s at one point in time had there high points where they felt like they were built for the user. Now they are glorified billboards that run apps.
