Living in Kentucky, we have a lot of mountainous land that’s kinda useless for anything except hunting and camping.
Not uncommon to know people who bought a few acres out in the hills for the price of a used car and just camp out there. Lots of folks also sell hunting leases to make enough money to cover taxes or pay it off.
I knew a guy with the shittiest private island. He said it cost him $20,000 USD its in Canada, had enough room for a cabin that was just a shed with a queen mattress in it and a boat dock.
He showed me a video of him trying to enjoy it in summer and it was just CONSTANT heavy winds. He said he had to soundproof the cabin and goes there to read and write. If he wants to feel the wind he has to wear hearing protection and a jacket no matter the time of year.
I never thought I’d feel bad for someone who owns an island. Still first world problems galore, but $20k is very affordable for a piece of land.

Its interesting how much evidence there is for the “walking” though. There’s the oral tradition, then there’s the heads that were abandoned after falling over, ones that were abandoned because their bellies were too small to be a proper counter weight for walking, etc.
I really like the ones that fell mid walk that landed face down and cracked in half. The one I’m thinking of is right next to the quarry so it was clearly mid transport and it had to have been the walk method because there’s nothing else that would explain how it landed face down (except like cranes or alien hover tech)

Its John Dillon’s “The Middle Platonist’s” and its been really fascinating to read it as part of my desire to be educated on the history of Platonism and its eventual turn into a religion.
Its inspired me to start now a couple modern Plato clubs and I want to give my personal copy the love it deserves as the reprint is ass lol.
