15·25 days agoDoesn’t Iceland still follow the tradition of using the father’s first name followed by “son” or “dottir” for their “last names”?
So, when a Jonson meets a Jonsdottir at a singles bar, they just know that they both have fathers named Jon (hopefully not the same one).

News@lemmy.world•Peter Thiel and Larry Page are preparing to flee California in case the state passes a billionaire wealth tax, report says
15·1 month agoCalifornia is pretty strict about taxing you if you spend too much time there.
I’m in Washington state (no state income tax) and have had colleagues who’ve spent a lot of time in California warned by payroll that they’re approaching the limit on time before you’re deemed a tax resident (maybe 180 days per year, but I’m not sure).
In particular, any part of a day spent in California counts as a whole day, as I understand it. So if you fly in on Monday evening, spend Tuesday and Wednesday, then fly back Thursday morning, it’s 4 days.
I’ve been out of Canada for a while, so I don’t know how Global news is now. I suspect that comparing it to Fox News is probably overblown by about an order of magnitude, though. It’s very corporate and very stupid, but not at the Fox level.
I remember when I was living near the Roncesvalles neighborhood of Toronto during an election, and Global News decided to run a national news story looking at my riding as some kind of microcosm of the country. The whole story pitted it as a heated contest between the Liberals and Conservatives. I have no idea where they found the Conservative lawn signs for their establishing shots. The Liberals won handily that time with probably 50% of the vote to the NDP’s 35%. I think the Tory got about 12%. It was an incredibly stupid and misleading story that they probably only ran because it was cheap to make (since their Toronto correspondents could drive 15 minutes from downtown in the middle of the day to interview people who don’t have day jobs).

us-west-1 is the much smaller (and more expensive) SFO region.
Those islands aren’t above Canada, they are part of Canada. (Sorry for being nitpicky, but it can be a politically sensitive topic.)
Thank you! This meme is reposted often, and that non-word always jumps out at me.

News@lemmy.world•Trump threatens Canada with 10% extra import tax for not pulling down anti-tariffs ad sooner
1·3 months agoThis came up a few months ago when people were saying “But wait, congress has power to set tariff policy”. That was true until the Smoot-Hawley act that is often blamed (probably correctly) for triggering or at least greatly exacerbating the Great Depression. After that, congress ceded tariff control to the executive. AFAIK, there’s nothing stopping congress from taking it back, but I can’t see the current congress doing that.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does Coke Zero taste different in the UK vs. the USA?
9·4 months agoAs popcornpizza called out, most of the answers in this thread unfortunately seem unrelated to your question.
I live in the US and haven’t been to the UK in years, but I do visit Romania every year or two. I don’t notice a big difference between Coke Zero sold in the US versus Romania. I’m certainly not a Coke Zero expert, but they taste pretty much the same to me. My hunch is that Coke Zero tastes the same across Europe, but I’m happy to be corrected.
Huh… I had always assumed that it related to having one and a half feet/legs.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do all American stores have greeters?
3·4 months agoAt Costco, they’re less “greeters” and more “people who check your membership card”. Actually, since Costco switched to automatic card scanners, they’re “people who watch to make sure you scan your card and the machine makes the happy beep”.
That said, at least at my local Costco, they also smile and welcome you into the store – it’s just not their primary function.
Does pulling the lever teach people the difference between “affect” and “effect”? I’m willing to pull it on the off chance that it does.

politics @lemmy.world•Congresswoman Tenney Introduces the Better Straws Act to Codify President Trump’s Agenda
2·7 months agoIf you read the copyright notice on the website, it links to the relevant law, which starts with:
Copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government, but the United States Government is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise.
So it’s not a copyright violation, since it’s a US government work (and doesn’t fall under the exceptions listed in the law).

I remember reading something about the political divides in US sports fandoms.
If I recall correctly, the NFL and MLB are both pretty balanced across the political spectrum.
The NBA has more Democratic fans, which is largely demographic correlation with having more black fans. College football is arguably the quintessential Republican sport. Again, I think that’s largely demographics, though, because college football is more popular in areas without NFL teams (more rural areas).
