The Japanese military still flies nearly the same flag.

Programming@programming.dev•What things really helped you toget better at programming?
51·2 years agoReading books. There are some great books on programming out there. I would strongly recommend a A Players Guide to C#. It’s structure, practice problems, and explainations of the basics were far better than any free guide to programming that I’ve seen online. There are a lot of other great books out there too.
It also doesn’t matter too much about a book being outdated when you are only studying the fundamentals.
A lot of the stuff you read online has never been fact checked or edited for clarity. Some of it is great, but most of it is not.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Brain cofounder says Big Tech companies are lying about the risks of AI wiping out humanity because they want to dominate the marketEnglish
8·2 years agoLinux has decimated Windows in the server market. It would be unthinkable for a new project to use Windows server, even Azure assumes you want to use Linux.
There are lots of industrial applications where open source has dominated the market. As the end user you might not see it, but almost all software and digital infrastructure you use has open source components.
IMO if you were American, you would remember it for being traumatizing rather than for disrupting your cartoons. I’m about the same age as you and it had a huge impact on everyone I knew.
That book was written by a socialist.

263·3 years agoThere are way too many answers after you finish this quiz. You should recommend, at most, three options after the quiz. This doesn’t help narrow down your options much at all.

2·3 years agoMetal straws have gotten very popular in Taiwan, the home of bubble tea. It’s not that inconvenient to take a metal straw or other reusable straw with you.

Programming@programming.dev•thrown into a backend project as a backend dev with a language I don't know, how fucked am I?
17·3 years agoHave you used Java before? It’s not a big leap from Java to C#, most of the concepts are the same. At least C# is a memory safe language, although I’m not sure if you’re unfamiliar with the code base and languages if it really makes a difference which language you use here. Hopefully your coworkers can help hold your hand a bit here, this situation sucks.
No, its the steam app that runs on Chromium.
Never visit Europe then.

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmy still consumed less data than reddit even heavily usedEnglish
18·3 years agoPart of this may just be that Lemmy does not stream video through the app right? Also most Lemmy servers force very small image sizes.

Android@lemdro.id•Spotify’s first US price hike for Premium is coming next weekEnglish
111·3 years agoIt’s a reasonable increase considering recent inflation, and safe since YouTube just raised their price too. In the long run I would be worried for them since YouTube premium is a much better deal if you don’t care about Spotify’s exclusive podcasts.
I think it was only free for a limited time when you buy the car, they might have changed it since then though.
Even Toyota is doing this now. They locked features like the digital tire pressure gauge behind a paywall on their app.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What video game have you played the most, that you think is garbage and no one else should ever play?English
3·3 years agoThe single player mission packs were great. I loved Naxx and League of Explorers. I wish Blizzard could have just made that a separate game, since there was no incentive for unfun power creep in a single player experience. I guess Slay the Spire fills that void at least.

You’re much more likely to just restart than to shutdown and need to hit the power button. I don’t think I’ve shutdown my MacBook since I turned it on, or my Linux box either. IMO unless there’s a power outage you’ll never need to hit that button. Still dumb though but i can’t imagine this as a deal breaker.
$599 for this thing is an insane deal.
