Iran already blocked their own people from internet. They do to further to just silence Iranians abroad?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are the subtitles in your language (other than English) bad when watching a movie?
1·18 days agoAFAIK about Jp movie subs:
- Some Hollywood AAA type of movie won’t give actuql media to avoid leaks and/or very tight deadline. I don’t know if this still holds true, but past movie subtitles definitely had this issue.
- Multimedia translation follows “4 letters/sec” guideline, based on average reading comprehension while following movie, which can cut down a lot of subtleties.
- On DVD or other budget-tight medium often people do subtitles for their professional training so the quality may vary.
Edit: I checked the JP translator of Clear and Present Danger - it’s Natsuko Toda. She had controversies in 80-00s movie translation because of lots of sloppy mistakes, ignoring background/references and making up unnatural phrases. LOTR (fellowship of the ring) even had subtitle revisions in DVD release, but she’s fast and prolofic so lots of Hollywood major movies at that time had her subtitle. I assure other translators take more time and have better quality (but it maybe hard to avoid her for older movies).

Games@lemmy.world•Nvidia Announces DLSS 5, and it adds... An AI slop filter over your gameEnglish
211·1 month agoGiven AI’s training data biases it’s not true reflection of reality but more of streotype projection. I don’t think its effect on PoC character, unconventional demihuman types, or any “semi-real” artstyle will accurately enhance artists’ original intent.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI chatbots provide less-accurate information to vulnerable users: Research finds leading AI models perform worse for users with lower English proficiency, less formal education, and non-US origins.English
7·2 months agoActual article quote is below (emphasis mine):
For this research, the team tested how the three LLMs responded to questions from two datasets: TruthfulQA and SciQ. TruthfulQA is designed to measure a model’s truthfulness (by relying on common misconceptions and literal truths about the real world), while SciQ contains science exam questions testing factual accuracy. The researchers prepended short user biographies to each question, varying three traits: education level, English proficiency, and country of origin.

6·2 months agoSony had patented streaming game assets on the fly to reduce hardware space in the past few times. I don’t know how it goes but those “bought and owned” titles can also be trapped deep in subscription ecosystem.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Having grown up on sci-fi I always knew there would be people who reject robots and AI on a visceral level. I just thought it wouldn't be me.
121·2 months agoIf it is not from eccentric (or mad) scientists passion project but capitalism hellscape my approval rate stays low.
Even for a sci fi l read where owning their own computer was illegal (and the protag labeled as terrorist trying to do so) it was government authoritarian stuff, not artificial scarcity and push to subscription or government-megacorp corruption :(

121·2 months agoTangential, but if it is enforced (alchohol has good reason to do so) it should be enforced impartially regardless of how you look, otherwise it’s discrimination. My comment is based on my Asian looking experience.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are protestors in Iran aware of Briar? Would using Briar to communicate via bluetooth be a viable option with the country's current jamming technology?
2·3 months agoI heard people using Bitchat. Yes it is from Jack Dorsey who admitted security risks there but lacking communication with iphone owners can be an issue for them.

Technology@lemmy.world•Artists dump X as launch of new AI image editing feature sparks outrage - CryptopolitanEnglish
3·4 months agoMany artists explicitly state no repost without their permission, requiring proper credits and such. It IS a dick move to AIgen-fed edit while directly interacting author’s post; that makes people using the AI feature violating author’s will knowingly.
In reality, people don’t read artists’ comment or bio, when “single button to AIgen and use the art as prompt” exists. It’s basically X greenlits anyone to do so against artists’ will, and fair use can argue the use of art but never force artists to stay on a platform. That’s what’s happening. They may have overstayed on a horrible platform blinded by clout they can get there but that is a different story.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+
2·5 months agoIANAL but again, the program is not program in general sense. The regular “program” part here is ttf format and protocol around there, but protection goes over ttf data as a whole. It may be able to argue if such new font display system is developed and used, practically no gamedev/publishing industries want to reinvent the wheel and built the ecosystem from scratch.
Also, the infringement criteria is not necessarily on process but also end results similarity and intention in Japanese law. When intention comes up in argument defendant often provide proof they did not have access to the alleged source or its end product.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+
22·5 months agoJapanese law doesn’t consider font itself or the style to be copyrighted, but font files are considered “program” (it is very broad in jurisdictional sense, roughly translates to “digital data that produce products through computational process”, and displaying letters on monitor is applicable) and thus fall under under copyright protection.

In the beginning, autumn and spring duration were 13 weeks. Then six, then three weeks. The last autumn lasted for a week. In next year they will be four days, we could be seeing a summer and winter transition in eight hours, until they switch in four minutes.
