I’m not on Signal because Signal thinks you should only be able to create an account on an android or ios device so I respect their wishes and don’t create one.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Windows 10 refugees flock to Linux in what devs call their "biggest launch ever"
1·7 months agothey are gonna be trapped in windows
But you understand that when VR headset makers and game developers read your comment, this is all they will take away from it ^.
“oh sweet, people won’t leave windows, so we only have to support one operating system and can save the money we would have to spend to support linux”, right?

1·7 months agoI second utopiah’s point, if assembling one with your own hands sounds like fun to you, go for it. But a second hand Reverb G2 from ebay will almost certainly be both cheaper, and better for using it in almost every way, it would even have significantly higher resolution.

1·7 months agoYou mean 3dof?
There was a relativty fork vis3r that started writing a monado driver. Not quite complete but it could be a starting point for anyone wanting to make one.
I recently bought a phone from Volla that ships with ubuntu touch. Somewhat painful, but entirely possible to use. I also backed the liberux indiegogo for a more modern proper mainline linux phone again.
I’m just not using any google play and ios exclusive apps and services anymore. Yea it’s painful but if you want to see an ecosystem outside of google play and ios, you have to buy and use it. Just be prepared to be the 0.1% that literally nobody cares about. Like when traveling I can follow my ICE train schedule on the Deutsche Bahn website, but it will log me out and delete my entire state after 15 minutes or so of inactivity. Or a couple of years ago I saw that uber had a web app and at some point wanted to order one for a group. turns out when trying to finish the order (which you can’t dry run), I got a generic error and someone with the app had to order. After uber sent me 125 marketing mails after that, telling me to order discounted food with uber eats, I think I finally unsubscribed (I only didn’t earlier out of morbid curiosity).
Personally I live by just not using this stuff is better than being like “oh I need waydroid to run android in a container and use the reverse engineered reimplementation of google play, and also need to fake some stuff to pass integrity checks etc. to use an E-Scooter”.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•Not trying to clickbait but is this the end for kernel-level anti-cheat?
3·2 years agoFor the Index and 2.0 Basestation it’s supposed to work for a while now https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamVR-for-Linux/issues/320#issuecomment-1835581128
Not the most comfortable but if you get one with usb-c pd charging, there are quite a few powerbanks even with 100+ watt now.
I used it once to use the in browser bug report thing to request that they support immersive WebXR on linux.
Because I can log into the sync feature without the browser logging me into every single google service automatically with the same account.
Also the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•What's your experience with VRR/FreeSync on Linux?
3·3 years agoI use kde wayland and I have cheap monitors with small vrr ranges. Games with fps drops and stuttering cause the monitor it’s on to flicker. A lot. So I leave vrr disabled.
The arch wiki says
Warning: As SDDM will be treated as a separate window by KWin, logging in will close the window. Therefore logging out or switching user will present undesirable behaviour.
What exactly does this mean?

Signal does not care about anyone who does not use android or ios and offers no official way to create an account without them. I wouldn’t call that accessible.
