I had a shell account there many years ago didn’t know they had a Lemmy instance thanks for reminding me about them.
I was wondering about what would happen if you started a nonprofit and ran a Lemmy/Mastodon instance and charge like 1 or 2 bucks a month. So if it gets flooded with users you have money to scale it up. And hire admins and such. You get the stability and centralization of a corporation but no profit motive

2·3 years agoI’m from the seattle area and this isn’t unheard of there but its really uncommon. A man in monroe washington used an innertube as a getaway after a bank robbery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Curcio
Theres plenty of rivers but most of them are not suitable for this. The state touches the ocean and is divided east/west by a giant mountain range. The NW peninsula is a giant mountain range. It’s anything but flat there. My last apartment there was about 100 feet from a cliff that fell off into the puget sound.
You’re more likely to get on a boat and paddle around and drink thank just get a river and see where it takes you. I’ve spent many an afternoon drinking beers in a canoe (you can have a fishing pole as cover)
I really miss /r/buttcoin I don’t know what to do with myself now. Where will i get my daily dose of schadenfreude?

20·3 years agoNo worries don’t feel like you have to keep 99% uptime or anything. I just appreciate that you let us all use your instance.
I would guess having not seen any logs or anything that the server might need more resources or is hitting some limit that hasn’t come up before. Like max open files or some sort of ram limit. I haven’t looked into running a lemmy instance yet but usually you can mess with the config and squeeze a little more life out of stuff. But it could be that the server itself needs to be more powerful.
I’ve had a lot of problems getting posts to load that are on other large instances. The whole ecosystem is probably just slammed right now. Reddit dying made people go “well whats a thing like reddit I could use instead” and we’re all just showing up load testing the small instances people set up for a small group of friends.
me too
Hey I work in tech and live in chicago. I’d be happy to help out in any way I can. I keep linux boxen alive for a living.

10·3 years agoI didn’t like Twitter for that reason. Often I’d follow someone because I saw some posts they made about something I’m interested in. Then suddenly they’re flooding my feed with stuff I don’t care about and often being really annoying while they do it.
I rarely find someone who I like all their posts. So it’s like do I just put up with the furry porn retweets because this person is a genius who occasionally posts about really interesting hacks?
I don’t really know how this system works but if I’m on one instance looking at stuff on another does that help at all? Is stuff cached to help spread out the load?
I’m part of the problem. How’s it going guys?

Dailly reminder: there are no good printers.
