I think France and/or USSR win this one. No monarchs, “re-educated” or not.

22·1 month agoCromwell Coulson, the chief executive of OTC Markets, which runs a stock market, said that if the new mayor and Ms. Khan too aggressively single out large companies, they could sour the city’s business climate
Fuck em and fuck you. Let those companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars to have less access to the biggest market in the country.
I would like to know more but I don’t want to give my email address to some website I may never look at again just to see pricing/restrictions of something I might want.

3·1 month agoWhat do you expect to happen?
Probably nothing and he dies a sadly comfortable life.
I participate in protests and boycotts, I donate as much as I can to organizations I believe in. I talk to my friends about trying to organize more and I constantly talk to them about a general strike and a need to shut the system down as it is. My career actively helps against waste and climate change. You’ll probably say that’s the bare minimum and maybe it is but I have a family to take care of so I can’t be out there like Greta Thunberg. It’s not that I don’t think violence can change things but I’m a nonviolent person.
I understand that my comments on a niche social media website will do nothing to change anything.
My apologies if that’s not enough for you random stranger.

5·1 month agoYes they’re out and there’s some terrible shit about him in there but he doesn’t want anyone asking him questions about it. You should know since it sounds like you’ve had enough time to read over 30,000 pages.
Do I think being best buddies with a known peodphile and sex trafficker is the worst thing he’s done, probably not but he absolutely doesn’t want to talk about it because he has no good answers.
It’s all part of his flood the zone tactics to control the narrative of anything. So, he’ll continue to violently kill and imprison people, and put his name on stupid shit, and kill the planet with coal, and tear down the norms of this country. Anything to provide distractions that his base can focus on and to avoid any questions or prosecution.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are advent wreaths a thing outside of Germany?
2·1 month agoNo family rituals around the candles that I can remember. We lit them with the lights off but no singing or sayings or things along those lines once they were lit the lights would come back on. We did it once a week, I think on Sundays since that’s the start of the new week and then we would let them burn for a bit before putting them out until the next week.

12·1 month agoUS here, I was raised Catholic in West Virginia. The church I went to growing up always had an advent wreath, and when I was younger, our family would light one at home. I believe the church still does it but my family hasn’t done it since I was younger.

Books@lemmy.world•What's the best history book you've ever read?
3·2 months agoThe Indifferent Stars Above It’s a book about the Donner Party. Unfortunately all lost people learn about is “people eat each other” but the actual story so much more intriguing and that one little anecdote really minimizes the whole thing. It’s a string of bad luck coupled with greedy speculators, classism, hubris, and plain stubbornness.
The crazy thing to me is how close they almost made it to not being stuck in the mountains, one day. They sent a group out to try and get to California and alert people to their plight, that story is harrowing in its own right. Add to that, many of the survivors settled in some of the most beautiful and now expensive land in California and it’s just a wild ride from beginning to end.
. It largely depends on how they are investing in it. Gold is a commodity just like lumber, gas, cotton, or livestock. You can invest in them like you would a stock or a mutual fund. Just like those other investments, the price will change daily based on the market. Gold is a weird one because everyone knows it was valuable historically and many people have physical versions of it. People use gold in their investment portfolios to hedge against some of their risk because typically the value of gold would go up when stocks would go down but our money was also tied to gold 50+years ago. The physical versions will change price too but they change differently.
- Gold coins? Unless they’re old or rare, they’re only worth the face value.
- Gold jewelry? It has value if it’s solid and not plated and then you need to get it appraised to know a fair value.
- Bullion? Probably the best form to have it in because that’s what countries and people that want to transfer physical gold will use.
In the event of total societal collapse, gold won’t matter other than it’s a shiny metal. They are better off investing in something more useful like the lumber.
My favorite was “Halloween” in Halo 2 multiplayer, kind of a knock off “hide-n-seek” but with a twist.
No shields, no radar, the only weapons were a sword and a pistol, and you only had one life. One player was “Michael Meyers”, that player had the sword and chased down everyone else. All the other players hid while Michael picked you off one by one. Once one player was left, that person became Jamie Lee Curtis and could try to take down Michael Meyers. (To be fair that person should be Dr Loomis or Laurie Strode but it was more fun to use the actor’s name than a character.)
The twist was the music. In Halo 2, you could hear enemy team chatter through the tv speakers and it got louder as you got closer to the enemy. Using that, Michael Meyers would have the Halloween theme song playing so you knew when he was close but you didn’t know where he was. It was truly thrilling, you hear the music, you know he’s close, but not where, the music would get louder and louder as he approached….and then he would walk right by your hiding spot. Or, you’re walking around as the music builds so you know he’s close, you think you’re safe because you have an idea where he is, and suddenly he’s right behind you with a sword in your back.
This is my simple history as some who never lived there but has a degree in history.
In the 1800s, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho were part of the Oregon territory. In the middle of that century, white settlers began to move in and they hated slavery and didn’t want it but they hated free black people even more than slaves. They eventually passed a few laws that banned “negroes” and “mullatos”. The area also had a large influx of religious fundamentalist and separatists in its early history. Those laws were eventually repealed but created the majority white population of that area.
The early/mid 20th century saw other issues like the KKK but those were minor compared to what comes later. Cut to the 1970s and the Aryan Nations and other white nationalist groups began to move there. Those groups grew and encouraged more like minded racists to move there in hopes of setting up a whites only homeland.

More posturing to look like they’re taking charge. I don’t know if any of what I’m about to say is true but if those attorneys already had the accrued PTO, they will get their pay for that time anyway, at least that’s how it’s worked anywhere else I’ve worked in the US. Also, if they can prove that the firing was retaliatory, they may be able to get further compensation and payouts.
Like I said, I know nothing of their employment/contracts so I could be talking out of my ass, but if what I said is true then the government is paying more money than they would be if they just let the prosecutors resign. I could be wrong once benefits are included.
