Yup. If you want to understand why some nu trek shows are hated, I recommend Major Grin’s youtube channel. They do an amusing job of showing how inconsisent the new shows are in regards to respecting Gene Roddenberry’s utopian vision and the established canon.
Shows like Academy and Discovery would’ve been highly acclaimed if they were set in their own sci fi universes, but they chose to label it Star Trek then immediately threw away many of the qualities that people look for in Star Trek. Its kinda like if someone started writing new Sherlock Holmes novels where Holmes and Watson are too stupid to discover clues. You could still write stories about them solving crimes, but the stories will be different in a way that pisses off much of the estalished fanbase.

I have watched all the trek. Major Grin does a really good job explaining the issues for those who don’t intend to watch the series. All he does is clip new and old trek together in amusing ways so you can see the things that bother fans.
I’m glad you liked it, I would have liked it too if it wasn’t labelled as Star Trek. But acting like no Star Trek fans watched the show before forming an opinion is extremely ignorant of the fandom. Many of us have spent decades enjoying Star Trek and will at least try to watch everything with that label. Those decades watching formed certain expectations that Academy did not fulfill.
The outrage certainly seems excessive at times, but that is because of the passion fans have for Rodenberry’s vision and because outrage is granted higher value by the algorithms determining our feeds. You may not want to believe it, but the hate Academy receives is more organic than manufactured. Of the dozens of fans spanning four generations I am priviledged to call friends and family, not a single one said Academy was good and the viewership overall seems to agree with that sentiment. I get a lot of crap from them because I think the Kurtzman stuff would’ve been great if he made it in its own universe and called it something else. It just doesn’t feel like Star Trek to many of us who have been following since the beginning.
