I specifically chose my instance by what content they did and didn’t choose to block. I turned away from several otherwise appealing instances because they didn’t block some of the content I would’ve wanted them to. I know I can do it myself, and I do when I need to, but I want an instance that aligns with my interests enough that I don’t have to worry about blocking every problematic group as they pop up. If something changes and the instance ends up blocking things I wouldn’t want blocked, I move to another instance. It’s as easy as moving to another seat on the bus - barely an inconvenience.

2·4 days agoGood to know, thanks! I’ve seen a lot of good things about Hyundai as well, though I do get concerned given how many issues I’ve had with my 2 Kias over the last several years. I was considering waiting to get an EV Corolla when they apparently come out in a year or two, but I also don’t know if I want to wait that long.
Usually when someone is contacting someone else while working on making peace with their feelings about that person’s behavior, it’s because they want to have a discussion with them about it. It’s unusual for it to be a one-and-done text without expectation of a response. But if a response is expected, it’s then unusual to follow up that text with another concerning a completely different topic. If I were in this situation, I’d find it hard to begin a discussion about her annoyance, which is valid and deserves to be explored, when the current topic is now a winery van.

4·4 days agoA lot of the republicans I know honestly believe there’s a huge swath of people on wellfare who are totally healthy and could work if they wanted to, but instead they take government handouts and make a whole bunch of money doing nothing by convincing people they’re needy. I always ask them to point to even one of these supposed people, but they always change the subject.

1·4 days agoYes, cops and soldiers are meant to have different roles, but when we’re focusing on their shared propensity for killing innocent unarmed people, there’s not much of a distinction.

19·4 days agoI’ve been considering getting an electric car, and have been researching good models, and I can’t believe how many places are still recommending Tesla. I know the fediverse is far lefter than most other places, but I thought at the very least the general population had stopped trusting Musk and his scams.

97·5 days agoSooo… the vast majority of Democrat voters? I know we’re all pretty big lefties here, but I’ve never met a single Democrat voter out in the real world who didn’t think Obama was the perfect president who did absolutely nothing wrong. My father in law - who has a degree in political science - keeps a photo of Obama in his wallet at all times along with pictures of his family members.
Sure, plenty of people have started to come to the realization that our soldiers are not heroically staving off evil abroad, but they’re still a tiny fraction of the American population as a whole.

141·6 days agoThe issue is that the system is built on the expectation that people do what they’re told. When that stops happening the expectation is that we the people will go out and either force them or kill them.

6·6 days agoIt’s amazing how some people still don’t fully grasp that Trump supporters don’t look at the world, they just look at Trump to tell them what they would see if they did.
My brother in law runs a snow removal business, and most of his workers are Hispanic, since not a lot of people want to work strange on-call hours based on snowfall. He’s basically lost his entire workforce because they’re too scared to leave their houses. He guaranteed them their jobs back when things hopefully improve enough that they feel safe again, but for now he’s trying to deal with a Minnesota winter with only 3 people.

Memes@lemmy.ml•in all fairness italian cuisine is a relatively recent inventionEnglish
51·7 days agoAccording to Wikipedia, with various sources, allied forces in Italy would often ask for bacon, eggs, and cheese on noodles, called “spaghetti breakfast,” so Italian chefs would modify the existing recipe for “pasta cacio e uova,” which was originally without meat, to feature cured pork, thus creating the original carbonara.
I didn’t see anything to specifically say whether they originally used bacon as the allied forces asked, or used other more traditional forms of cured pork from the start, but now guanciale, a cured pork jowl, is considered the traditional ingredient, though bacon is a common substitute outside of Italy.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•They're trying to infiltrate, instigate, and feed us false information. This is infiltration and preparation for a full scale suppression effort, and you need to start preparing. (Minnesota - 1/25/26)English
10·7 days agoThe unspoken understanding is that we’re preparing for war. The way you get people to become violent when violence is necessary is by getting them to do small things, then ramp them up to violence. If we come out and directly say that this is now a war and we’re going to need to kill our oppressors, we’ll get virtually no support, and will lose any sort of sympathy from the general population on the spot, losing any chance to put up a fight against this regime.
We need to get people actively doing whatever they feel comfortable enough to do in their communities, and then let them come to the conclusion that the next step is necessary on their own - it’s not a choice someone else can make for them. Push too hard and they’ll regress back to the “violence is never the answer” rhetoric that was specifically instilled in them by the system to keep such an uprising from happening.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•[Video] ICE agent asked why he is taking pictures of a legal observers car says: "Cause we have a nice little database. And now you are considered a Domestic Terrorist. So have fun with that."English
14·7 days agoWell, they’re not putting everybody in the database. They’re specifically putting anyone they think is against Trump in the database, so that they can eventually round them all up and dispose of anyone who doesn’t bow down to him. This isn’t an exaggeration, it’s literally what he’s saying: by opposing ICE, you become an enemy of the state, and we’ve seen what they do to enemies of the state.
The village was settled back when global population was less than 2% of what it is now. There was probably a whole lot more space per resident back then. Not saying the interchange is a good use of space, obviously, but there’s certainly a happier medium than packing 30k people in the same size area.
My work office has a full kitchen that nobody ever uses, so one day I decided to just make cookies for everyone while I was on the clock. As I suspected, nobody wants to be the one to reprimand the guy giving out cookies for wasting company time. I work mostly remote now, but once a month when I come in for a meeting I’ll spend a couple hours in the morning making cookies, and everyone’s always excited for it.
You’d be surprised what you can get away with by just doing stuff without asking if it’s okay first. Asking first usually gets ideas shot down, but once you’re already in the middle of doing something, most people assume someone gave the go-ahead. Worst case scenario you can pull the “I thought it’d be fine” line, but I almost never have to do that.
I had to sign up for the experimental bug test version of Voyager to gain access to piefed compatibility, though that was several months ago now; not sure if it’s been added to the main version yet or not. I haven’t had any issues using the experimental version.
