Thanks so much for sharing! You gave me some good info to start looking into. I appreciate your help! I was getting a little weary of Proton when they announced the AI nonsense and now the crypto wallet really seals the deal. Doesn’t feel good knowing my money is going to develop buzzword features instead of fixing the existing issues in their current products.

Do you mind expanding on this? I recently moved away from Gmail to Proton in an attempt to be more privacy conscious and don’t really know of any alternatives. Even at a paid tier I only use Proton for their email services.
I would say I’m generally tech savvy but new to the whole privacy space. What better alternatives are there?

Technology@beehaw.org•Exclusive: See The Ways Shady T-Mobile Stores Treat Customers And Employees
7·2 years agoAs someone who has previously worked in the wireless industry for nearly a decade this is unsurprising. I worked for one of the Big 3 at a third party retailer and saw all kinds of shady things. From aggressive sales tactics to hostile management and straight up fraud. I was constantly getting in trouble with upper management because I refused to “live in the shade,” a term they used for committing knowingly unethical acts. The only reason I didn’t get fired (despite numerous threats) was because my sales numbers were always up to par. Turns out treating people with respect and keeping to your ethics was an equally effective way of hitting consistent numbers.

Solarpunk technology@slrpnk.net•Penkesu is a handheld PC that you can build yourself.
4·2 years agoThis looks super interesting! I’ve been looking for a simple “cyberdeck” build for awhile now. I think this one might be it. It looks like there’s quite a bit of room in the chassis, I wonder if you can fit a full Raspberry Pi in there with minimal tweaking.
You need to make sure your phone is very still before it appears. I usually will lay mine on a table or the top of a car and then tilt my head underneath it until it appears and when it does gently hit the button. I’ve gotten some pretty cool results from it like shooting stars and even the Milky Way.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•It looks like Duck Duck Go is down at the moment. What is your second choice for privacy respecting search?
21·2 years agoI really want to like stract but I can’t get it to give me good results. I typically search for programming related things and it has difficulty pulling up relevant information regarding things like documentation and posts regarding the issue.

Technology@beehaw.org•Massive data dump containing millions of passwords sparks security alert: Is your data safe?
3·2 years agoHuh, TIL. I had no idea that was an option but that’s super useful for things I need to type in on a device with no keyboard, or even things I can’t access my password manager for. Thanks for the protip there!
Oh that’s exciting! I’ll definitely have to dive into it sooner rather than later! I also have the audiobook, do you recommend that for a first time foray into it?
I haven’t gotten around to reading Project Hail Mary just yet (I’ve been on a fantasy kick recently) but I got it when it first came out! I’ve heard nothing but incredible things about it and can’t wait to give it a read. Fingers crossed they do it justice, movie adaptations always make me nervous.
This is absolutely my favorite short story! It’s such an interesting concept and delivered in a poignant way. The Kurzgesagt adaptation of it is very well done too.

Creative@beehaw.org•Any thoughts on Adobe Lightroom's Enhance Denoise?English
4·3 years agoInteresting, I didn’t know they added an enhanced denoise feature. I do astrophotography and removing noise is something astrophotographer’s constantly fight against so I’ll have to give this a shot. I’m curious how it’ll compare to something like Topaz Ai Denoise tool which does a pretty solid job.
Edited: I misread your original post and thought the 1st image was the original. I actually think it did a pretty decent job, perhaps adding a little bit too much sharpness, but overall I’m surprised at the results especially compared to its standard denoise tool.

Space@beehaw.org•Time Appears to Have Run Five Times Slower in Early Universe, Supporting Einstein's Relativity Theory
1·3 years agoI read through the article and it didn’t explain at all how studying quasars determined this. I wonder if there’s a better breakdown as to how they were able to ascertain this. I know there’s been some major announcements in the field thanks to quasar study so I’m curious as to how this ties into that.

4·3 years agoThis is incredible! It seems like there’s going to be a noticeable change in the night sky! As someone who’s just getting into astrophotography, I wonder if it’s something I’ll be able to capture.
Oof, hopefully it comes sooner than it took FFXV to get ported. Although I appreciate that they release eventually I wish they would just drop it cross platform and forget about the whole console exclusivity BS.

World News@beehaw.org•Republicans Declare Banning Universal Free School Meals a 2024 Priority
7·3 years agoIt’s insane seeing how they’ve built themselves on a platform of strictly hate. It seems like they’re never for things only against things. Well I guess outside of the child marriage thing seems they’re pretty for that. It’s so strange to me that in 2023 the republican party has regressed into essentially a draconian early industrial revolution era roll back of rights. I mean they’re even repealing child labor laws. It’s literally like they want to remove all progress from the last couple centuries. It blows my mind that this is acceptable in our country in the era.
Ooh! That has me pretty excited then! I’ve been very curious of how they were going to proceed from FFXV. It was such a weird development cycle and took forever, and then it’s release was kind of mixed. I’m hoping they have a nice polished game with a really engaging story.

How did you set it up? I’ve been wanting to setup forgejo in a docker container but wasn’t sure how easy the process is.
