Employee at the Black Mesa research facility in New Mexico. Recently we’ve dealt with 2 aliens trying to steal snacks.

Moved from kbin.social, here’s my old account: https://kbin.social/u/Mars2k21

I moderate the AI community over there (infrequently).

Hope your day is going well.

  • I have been stepping away, but I just love the good parts of tech too much. I still believe in the good it can do for my life and others. I do, like anyone, hate how it’s been monopolized over time by solely profit-driven groups and interests. Unfortunately, that stuff is rewarded by society over genuinely useful applications.

I’ve found a threshold of usefulness with every piece of tech I have. Once I can identify that it’s bullshitting and trying to make itself seem useful through manipulation (ex: Twitter, overpriced subscriptions), that’s when I cut it off. Too many things that manipulate you and try to take your attention or money while providing little in return.

Other stuff like my self hosting solution, game consoles, etc. are set up in ways that are beneficial. It’s not perfect, the AI industry will invade where they can, but I feel fortunate to be in a position where I am aware of ways I can have more control over my tech and therefore can dodge some of the predatory practices. Still though, sometimes I just give up on the endless YouTube videos and read a book instead. Full analog living isn’t the way though.

  • Yeah I’ve pretty much accepted that kbin.social is just gone at this point. I also owned a community there (/m/ai). I didn’t have any spammers appear, but it eventually just died since spam ruined the rest of the instance.

The signs were already there months in advance, but most of us stayed on the instance in hopes that the dev would eventually take up one of the offers to help maintain the instance. Was fun while it lasted, and was the best alternative to Reddit for sure as a software. I don’t even know how Ernest kept up with development during the initial Reddit exodus lol.

Honestly, I’m not impressed with Lemmy so far and I don’t really vibe with mbin for personal reasons even though the software is great.

This whole kbin story has just pointed out a lot of flaws in the Fediverse as a whole for me. I still like the idea, but the execution needs improvement.

  • This has been a long time in the making…hopefully Firefox will see a market share increase. Google is doing this right as they get slapped by an antitrust ruling ironically lol. If you haven’t already just go ahead and switch, if you like Lemmy you’ll probably like Firefox as well.

Side note: I try not to be negative here, but this would be a great time for Mozilla to get their act together as an organization. Love Firefox and the idea, but Mozilla has been pissing off the FOSS space for a while now with their decisions. If they’ve improved in recent years, disregard this.

  • I know some people who will buy vinyls but that’s as far as it goes for physical media in music. Music CDs are pretty much foreign objects in 2024 and people just stream instead.

A CD would be cool, but where am I ever going to use it? I don’t have a CD player at all…but I do have an Apple Music subscription. A vinyl at least is large and works better as a decoration. Don’t really see the point in using a CD.

If I want to support the artist I’m seeing, I just buy clothing instead.

P.S. we don’t know what a skibidi toilet is either. Ask gen alpha.
