Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Your favorite celebrity rewatch podcast is on strike, too
18·3 years agoHey, I respect it. Glad to hear they are in solidarity
I have never been ashamed in just straight up throwing a book down if I’m not in pretty quickly. Not everything is going to be everyone’s taste, and classics of all genres can be dull if you don’t find the premise interesting. Too many books out there to slog through anything lol
I used to think Static-X was the heaviest, most badass band out there. I loved all of their stuff and bumped it daily up through high school. It’s funny, because there was like a ten year gap where they were very un-cool to everyone after that, but now they seem to be having a kind of resurgence with a new front man. Saw them live a few months ago and the venue was packed with a 50/50 split of zoomers and old farts
Chat Pile has been my newest obsession! Hope to catch their show sometime soon

Texas@lemmy.world•[Houston Chronicle] Houston just started enforcing a decade-old ban on feeding the homeless. Volunteers are fighting back.
4·3 years agoThey try to frame it as disrupting places of business or as a health concern because the meals being handed out aren’t regulated by any food service organization. This of course ignores the fact that Food Not Bombs were giving away meals outside of the public library, after hours, and the fact that the homeless population wouldn’t necessarily otherwise be able to get any food at all.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?
12·3 years agoPee Wee’s Big Adventure. The whole movie is a trip, but specifically the Large Marge scene freaked me out for a long time growing up.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some books I can read about socialism/the state vs corporations/the economic and sociological side of government
3·3 years agoWhenever I introduce people to the concepts of Marxism, fascism, capitalism, etc., I start by recommending two books:
Wages of Rebellion by Chris Hedges
and
Blackshirts and Reds by Michael Parenti
Both are written in very accessible language and both do a great job at not just explaining these economic/political theories, but also adding historical context to ground the theories in real-world actions.
Sitting in the upper part of the shopping buggy being pushed around Wal-Mart. Must have been 2 or 3.

At least in the circles I’m in most of the criticism comes from the fact that the media campaign was largely funded by the Hobby Lobby founder, who is notoriously anti-science/queer/abortion/etc.

Books@lemmy.ml•What is the most disturbing book you have ever read?
1·3 years agoIt’s difficult to choose as a horror fan because there are books that hit differently for vastly different reasons. I think Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite might be the one that eeked me out the most so far though. It was a thoroughly enjoyable book, but it was practically a meet-cute romcom with serial killers as the main characters. Loved it. Probably won’t read it again lol.

World News@beehaw.org•A San Francisco library is turning off Wi-Fi at night to keep people without housing from using it
11·3 years agoThe actions of the library are cowardly and the justifications of the residents in the area are abhorrent. God forbid we do something to help those in need, let’s just push them out of sight instead.

Blackberries and blueberries if I’m eating them straight-up. If its berry-flavor, like in a syrup or something, its boysenberry 100%
