Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do people who try to convince others to switch to metric focus so much on the conversions?
7·16 days agoThere are plenty of people though who do these kinds of calculations daily. Like engineers and scientists.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Living paycheck to paycheck doesn't necessarily have to FEEL miserable. Capital just encourages that.English
10·16 days agoThe problem with living paycheck to paycheck isn’t that you can’t book cruises. It is that you have zero security. If something breaks, you can’t repair it. If you lose your job, you’re on the street. If things get any more expensive, you are skipping meals.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Trump is the new 9/11 - in a decade, we will be looking back with nostalgia to a world before international rules and standards were still valid
663·27 days agoIt’s not like international law really meant anything before Trump. It has been broken many times before with no real consequences, also by the US. The UN really doesn’t have the power to enforce anything.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I’m not saying that I agree with right- or center-wing views, and I do condemn transphobia. However, do you think there should be a distinction between critiquing beliefs of transgender people and the
121·1 month agoI have tried to get my point across before, but was labeled a transphobe. I have no issue with trans people and wish them all the best in their pursuit of happiness. I understand the issue they face: Society put them in one of two gender categories, and they don’t feel that’s where they belong. That’s a valid issue in my eyes.
I just don’t really see the current approach fixing this. Its like we saw that there was an issue with racism, but instead of abolishing it, we added more categories like “race-fluid”.
In my eyes, the root issue is the concept of gender identities, and how big a role they play in our day to day lifes. Why does the way people address me (sir/madam, he/she) depend on my gender identity? Why does every form I fill out ask for my gender identity? Why are so many things separated by gender?
I’d like to see a post-gender society, where we don’t need pronouns. Where there is no concept of gender identity, because everyone is just themselves.
Instead of staying inside the box, adding classification after classification, I think we should leave the box and stop assigning a gender identity to every one of us.
Lemvi@lemmy.sdf.orgtoAm I the Asshole@lemmy.world•AITA for wishing my uncle a Merry Christmas a day late?English
4·2 months agoYou have no obligation to wish anyone a merry christmas.
I’m annoyed by the notion that our bodies somehow need animal protein to build muscles. What we need is a specific mix of amino acids. Animal proteins generally provide a similar mix, but that just means that eating meat is the easy route. It is definitely possible to mix plant proteins to provide our bodies with everything they need (at least in terms of proteins).
And honestly, I’m just tired of animal suffering, man.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I cannot understand what dose of vitamin D I should take
4·2 months agoIt is probably best to listen to your doctor.
Personally, I supplement 25 µg K2 and 20 µg D3 (800 IU), because I am vegan.
2,000 IU seems excessive to me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re overdosing with 8,000. I’m not a doctor tho, so idk.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How much are you willing to inconvenience yourself to save money?
67·2 months agoI usually take my hourly wage and compare it to the inconvenience. For example, if that inconvenience takes about an hour of my life, but saves me more than my hourly wage, I take it. There are exceptions of course, for example if I am low on money.
I am not defending US imperialism, just criticizing a double standard.
Imperialism is a state seeking to maintain and/or extend power over other states. That is exactly what China is doing with Taiwan. Of course, unequal exchange is also a form of imperialism.
Imperialism is when you have a civil war.
That’s just wrong. What is true though is that civil wars more often than not are influenced by foreign powers trying to influence them to their own benefit.
Imperialism is cool as long as the people doing the imperialism call themselves socialists or communists 🙂↕️

AI@lemmy.ml•Why isn’t there an AI that compresses music into tiny files and recreates it accurately?
9·4 months agoWe already have quite good methods for compression, both lossy and lossless. Any “AI” method would have to reliably beat the benchmarks set by those. Seems like that hasn’t happened yet, though there definitely is research in that direction.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Does it ever make sense to have the window open with AC on?
4·5 months agoAs long as having the windows open and the AC running has the same effect, it makes sense to do both. As soon as the AC has to work against the air coming in from outside, it probably makes sense to either close the windows or turn off the AC.
Even then it might make sense to keep doing both though. For example, if the AC only changes air temperature and moisture, but does not reduce volatile organic compounds, and it’s hot and humid outside. You keep the window open to keep VOC low, while keeping the AC on to keep temperature and moisture pleasant.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does being a ‘hero’ mean you are a perfect person?
6·5 months agoNo, it just means you are someone that helps others, even when you know that you won’t gain anything from that yourself.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•erotic scenes actors and actresses, how do you not get aroused while acting in those scenes?
16·5 months ago- who says they don’t?
- its probably not quite as erotic when there is an entire crew pointing lights, cameras and microphones at you, and a director giving you instructions
It’s really more of a contract, “I promise to carry and raise your children, you promise to provide the money” That’s why throughout much of history, you couldn’t get divorced, it wasn’t about love, it was about security.
Nowadays marriage isn’t really as important as before, but still relevant. For women, having a child usually still means making career sacrifices.

Children experience more extreme emotions in general, not just happiness. Think of the tantrums they throw.
And honestly, no, my main goal isn’t to blindly chase dopamine.
For one, happiness is more complex than that, you cannot just reduce it to one hormone (e.g. what about serotonin or oxytocin?)
Secondly, I think experience and personal development are important, they put happiness into perspective and let you appreciate it better. Leaving your comfort zone can be deeply rewarding, even if it doesn’t immediately result in a dopamine boost.
I can confidently say that I am happier now than I was as a child, despite the fact I now laugh less.
