Technology@lemmy.world•Russian official admits completely banning VPNs is 'simply impossible'English
1·13 hours agoYou can use SOCKS instead of a VPN. SOCKS proxies allow arbitrary socket connections. You can use them for anything. The biggest difference is a VPN routes all(most) your traffic, whereas SOCKS are typically only used for specific(explicit) connections. Both other strong end-to-end encryption, obfuscating what you’re doing.
The good thing is the abundance of residential and mobile SOCKS proxies. So you look like a regular person on the Internet and you’re not using commercial IP ranges.

2·1 day agoI remain hopeful of a progressive resurgence.
Gerrymandering can become dummymandering if they spread the red too thin.
Hopefully it won’t be excessively bloody, but they seem to already be onboard with that. So it’ll probably become necessary.

33·1 day agoIt’s saying they’ve increased 9 or 10 percent over 3 months. There’s 12 months in a year (annualized), which if that rate continues for a year that’d then be 40-50 percent annualized.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on internet trollingEnglish
2·3 days agoTrolling is what happens when someone decides normal human interaction is overrated and instead tries to provoke, annoy, or derail others on purpose.
More precisely, trolling is posting or saying things not because they’re true or useful, but because they’re likely to trigger emotional reactions . That can include:
- Deliberately offensive or absurd claims
- Pretending to hold extreme views just to bait responses
- Pursuing arguments for personal entertainment rather than wider discussion
- Repeatedly derailing conversations
The key feature isn’t just being wrong or rude. It’s intent . A troll wants a reaction. If people get angry, confused, or dragged into pointless debate, the troll considers that a win.
The term itself comes from fishing, where you “troll” by dragging bait through the water and waiting for something to bite. Internet trolls just swapped fish for human attention, which, as it turns out, is even easier to catch.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Should I pretend to care about the lives in Gaza and Palestine?English
6·4 days agoThat’s a common reaction to things too difficult to rationalize otherwise: apathy.
If you want to feign sympathy because you think it’ll make you look good, go for it.
Dale Carnegie might encourage you to accept the worst possible outcome -really accept it- then try to improve upon it. And keep trying to improve upon it.
This goes hand in hand with ACT - acceptance and commitment therapy - which is a common method used to help people deal with grief and getting unstuck (overcoming anxiety, fears, etc.), and acceptance is the critical first step. Once you really accept things, that gives you the foundation for commitments to improve the situation.
And they don’t necessarily have to be related. You could accept that your partner has dumped you and your commitment might be moving onward with your life by taking/investing time for yourself.
Or you could accept that a war on the other side of the world is not it really influenced much (or at all) by your decisions so you instead you might go for a bicycle ride or go fishing. Something you would rather do than interact with content that you ‘don’t give a fuck about.’
