Privacy@lemmy.ml•Looking for more communities about privacy that are less psychotic than Privacy GuidesEnglish
31·10 months agoI don’t know that it was privacy guides staff, but the 10 most regular commenters, which tend to blast out all other useful discourse. Jonah seems fairly stable, though I do think there was one staff member that seemed pretty unstable when discussing these items.

41·1 year agoThat second solution you mentioned is what I’m after. The first just hides the movies which isn’t the goal, we still want to know that they’re an option, just not take up 40 slots of Marvel movies. They’re all pretty much the same.
This Kometa thing…does it have to be run on a PC? We currently use a PS5 for Plex, but if this is a player side UI tweaker, I imagine that’s not gonna fly on a closed system like a PS5.

1·1 year agoUnfortunately, the installation instructions for Fedora Linux (my operating system) don’t work at the moment. Any other alternatives to this?

2·2 years agoBecause I already pay for Proton for drive, mail, and other services. I’ve used Mullvad in the past, and I definitely prefer it as a simple torrenting VPN, but Proton offers a lot more.

2·2 years agoI just tested it out to see if it would stop if I closed the VPN…it did not stop at all, just kept on downloading. There must be something I’m doing wrong. I’m on Ubuntu, which should function pretty similarly to PoP!_OS. I specifically picked a P2P server in Proton VPN, a United Kingdom one with the little arrow circle symbol.

5·2 years agoYeah, the only scary moment I’ve had was when the laptop decided to suspend itself, and when I turned it back on, Linux had disabled all networking systems outside of the default, but immediately started up qBit for some reason, so that was great.
I figured the further I got from Windows, the easier all of this would become, given the community’s tendency towards things like Linux, privacy, etc. It’s only gotten painfully more difficult and contains a lot more gatekeeping. As I’ve asked for help with things like this, especially on the newer versions of Mint and Ubuntu, I just get insulted, even though the old solutions no longer seem to apply.

6·2 years agoI know very little about networking unfortunately…I do not even think my ISP offers IPV6, but I could just be completely wrong. I went to both of those sites, and it showed me as across the world, where I had selected with ProtonVPN. There were no settings in there at all to change anything. ProtonVPN on Linux is literally just a box with a list of countries that you click on. So much weaker than Mullvad and ProtonVPN on Windows.

10·2 years agoThat’s unfortunate. I’ll end up sticking to Mullvad for now then. I am comfortable with the terminal for navigation and simple things like that, but nowhere near comfortable enough to stake the security of my computer or the wrath of my ISP on it.

452·3 years agoYou’re right, I don’t mean to sound entitled in any way, I’m just…frustrated and a bit lost. And it’s hard, because I don’t necessarily know where to look for help because the community (naturally) is fairly underground. Even signing up for this and posting this makes me nervous that I’ll “get caught” somehow, despite having a VPN.
You’re right though, I just assumed that since Torrents seem to be the best method, they’d be at the top. But they’re down there, I’m just clueless. I’m already having success with the 1337 site other people recommended though, which is good to know about.
That’s why I’m hoping for more communities. So far, TheNewOil is pretty good, as recommended by Moreeni above. Really good list of settings to change on Pixels and iOS, and I’ve been able to adapt a bunch of them to my Samsung phone as well. Haven’t even gotten to operating systems yet.
It sucks that we need such an extensive amount of work put in to make devices private, but oh well…
