It might be just so it fits with their own biases and world view little better. The only reasonable way to use information online is to follow evidence based information and look for trusthworthy official sources.

If you are going to selfhost your vpn then you are going to “hide” behind your vpns ip, which probably leads to you anyway. VPN services are often contacted by authorities and why they work is because they refuse to disclose the information.

Seems like a typical “everything was better when I was young and had energy” article.
