Tor is an application and technically doesn’t even has much to do with Linux itself, except that it also runs on it. Where you using a guide for installing and if so which one?

There’s an even better alternative on the CCC’s website, the original source of the video ;)

Videos@lemmy.ml•Minimalism is Getting Absurd: Updating Dieter Rams' 10 Principles
7·3 years agoVery insightful look into the mechanisms of minimalist design and their shortcomings.
Minimalism as a design trend dates back to the beginning of the last century, but you might have noticed that companies have extensively used minimalist principles in their product design in the past few years. Apple is especially known for this, but you see it everywhere nowadays. Cars, fridges, TVs… they are all stripped of any extravagant design features: fewer buttons, no ornaments, single colors, and so on. Even if you are not designer, you have probably noticed that in some way.

Technology@lemmy.world•The German Rhineland-Palatinate State Parliament has ditched X (Twitter) in favour of open-source decentralised MastodonEnglish
4·3 years agoThis has likely happened because the german government created the social.bund.de instance earlier this year
The instance is almost 3.5 years old btw, which you can easily see from the instance admin account @itteam@social.bund.de. It just wasn’t used by many government departments at the time, mostly the data protection agency and the BSI. The @ltrlp@social.bund.de account itself is pretty old too. It dates back to before the whole Twitter debacle. I guess that’s also part of the reason why they decided to go full Mastodon, since they already have a lot of experiences with it.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Announcing OpenLemmyStats.org: Publicly Queryable Vote History + Other Hidden Data for Any Lemmy User!English
5·3 years agoI’m pretty sure there is no particular reason why it’s done this way. It’s just the easiest method to coomunicate upvotes across different servers. There are already a lot of ideas for doing it differently or more efficient (e.g. vote aggregation) but that requires a more sophisticated architecture:
- Vote aggregation also makes faking votes much more efficient and requires different detection methods. Of course, a spam server can also invent users or votes but it’s a bit more complicated.
- Aggregation in any form can be hard to implement because it should be flexible enough to reduce load but not increase delay or make tracking a consistent state even harder. Finding the right configuration will be difficult and go through a lot of trial and error. Should be easier though now that more people are working on the code.
- Keep in mind that Lemmy should also be able to communicate with other services across the Fediverse like Mastodon via ActivityPub. I’m not sure if there is something in the standard for message aggregation yet. It’s definitely being discussed because Mastodon, Pixelfed and Peertube all have or went thorugh the same growth problems as Lemmy in terms of scaling, spam and security concerns. If there’s a good solution it will likely come through the AP standard.

4·3 years agoWait until you learn that PDFs support embedded Javascript.
Well yeah, but that was because of an influx of spam and not because beehaw admins have anything against lemmyworld. Afaik they are currently working out with lemmyworld’s admin how to solve this situation and refederate.
I think that has been confirmed as a bug and will be fixed next release.

Technology@beehaw.org•Dispelling the myth of a universal "Lemmy" community, and discussion of what the fediverse really isEnglish
1·3 years agoTLDR: A bunch of trolls from that instance spammed dick pics and started concern trolling with “rational debates” about trans people. Beehaw mods and admins couldn’t keep up with modding the stuff and decided to temporarily defederate (that’s basically a one-sided block) from lemmyworld and and also shitjutworks because most of the spam came from there. Currently, the adminds of all three instances are working together to find a solution and get everyone refederated.

2·3 years agoThe germans over on feddit.de may like it more.
What’s the difference?
Oh man this is just what I needed to chill before going to bed :)
Might be another bug because https://lemmy.ml/c/vpop@lemmy.ml (notice the instance postfix) also loads just fine. Maybe it’s something that has to do with how local instances get handled.

Totally different situation because most of these guns are from reservists in the army which are stored without ammo. So they are literally unusable unless you happen to get ammo for it.
