Actually it’s worse than nothing. Youtube promotes comments based on engagement, so while only an upvote increases the tally, voting at all still makes it more visible.

9·3 years agoI got here after they announced the API changes. Took about a week for the reddit posts to slow down at all but they’re back in full force now that the changes have been implemented.
It’s just people discussing something that’s relevant to them. It’ll go away eventually.

2·3 years agoIt’s a bug. I’ve been getting it too, pretty sure it’s related to how much stress the server is under. Give it a few minutes and refresh the page.
Allegedly, but reddit also spent tons of money on stupid shit. My favorite example is their braindead stupid million dollar Superbowl ad, but they also doubled the number of employees to 1400 in 2021. And all they have to show for it is a slow, ugly website and a trashy, extra-monetized mobile app. Fuck em.

0·3 years agoWhy are you shifting this argument so far? I never claimed the guy had tourette’s, and I never said this guy shouldn’t be insitutionalized. This is a completely irrelevant example.

2·3 years agoThe point I’m making is that the “fire” is a classic example of speech that isn’t protected in the US, but with this ruling there’s no way to prove intent. So what if I sat down and continued watching the movie afterwards? I just got over the delusion. And someone with tourette’s would probably apologize, try to calm people down, or even avoid a theater altogether. I’m pretty sure that someone with a peanut allergy can’t sue a peanut farm if they go visit and sample the produce; if you know there’s an extra danger for you specifically in performing an activity then you are responsible.
Not to mention tourette’s could never cause targeted, violent, electronic-message based harassment either. This is a focused, intentional action.

33·3 years agoCompletely insane ruling. Wild that Kagan went across the aisle for this.
the First Amendment requires proofs of mental state
So I guess it’s basically impossible to convict anyone of anything involving speech? If I yell “fire” in a crowded theater, how can you prove I wasn’t having a delusion that there was a fire? Maybe there was an explosion in the movie and I was so immersed I thought it was real!
Dude had previous convictions and spent years doing this harassing, it’s not like this was an isolated mental break. Truly insane.
It seems like a deliberate attempt to cause trouble and a federation debate to me. All that nonsense belongs on exploding-heads where it can be easily ignored

It’s a bug. Not sure if it’ll get fixed anytime soon, though… the guy who runs my instance explained it to me here: https://lemm.ee/comment/171585

1·3 years agoIs there a way for users to block instances? I’ve only been able to figure out how to block individual communities
probably try /c/lemmy_support@lemmy.ml
It doesn’t look like it’s possible in the app. You’d have to log in on a browser, go to your profile settings, and go to the “blocked” tab.
For what it’s worth… I think the mobile browser experience is currently superior to Jerboa anyway. The scrolling is smoother and if you open posts in a new tab, you can just close the tab when you’re done and you don’t wind up back at the top of the feed. I have high hopes for the app but man does it drive me nuts when I try to use it.
I don’t think it’s yet possible for users to block instances. As far as I know, you’d have to sign up on an instance that has lemmynsfw blocked.

sh.itjust.works Main Community@sh.itjust.works•sort by "New", updates instantly all the time?English
4·3 years agoit’s both. if you sit at the top you will see brand new posts come in one at a time and then occasionally get a giant flood as a new community gets federated.
it’s maddening. by far the biggest issue with this system.
lemmy currently has a system for displaying upvotes. anything that has been downvoted will have the total number of ups and downs displayed next to the arrows. reddit used to have a similar system with RES, but they removed it for Reasons™
i don’t think it’s possible to sort by upvotes alone but that would be a good feature
I initially wrote “how is it newsworthy anymore” but really as long as that’s how twitter communicates with news orgs, that’s twitter’s official statement about anything they’re asked
Their “press email” is literally just a bot that auto responds with the poop emoji. Has been for months.

Meta/Facebook and Google/Alphabet are very different from Twitter/X. The first two created parent companies under which their large brand names still exist, but are now managed along with their other properties (Instagram,
Snapchat, Waymo, Deepmind, etc.) Musk, meanwhile, is trying to completely burn down the Twitter brand for some incomprehensible reason.
