How does this compare to kitty/alacrity? Afaiu, these are also gpu accelerated terminals. Do they use older graphics rendering apis?

Speaking of Rust-powered terminals, I heard some good things about Warp. It has some unconventional features that help you use the command line more efficiently. It’s open source but a commercial product, and Mac-only for now.

Looks interesting, but why would I want an AI powered terminal? And why do they try to assure users that all data in the warp drive is encrypted and does not record keystrokes?

Terminal UIs can be a bit overwhelming. Suppose you wanted to use ffmpeg to extract timecodes 00:45-00:55 from a video and save the result as 128kbps MP3 audio. Normally I’d have to look up several different flags in the man pages or on the internet to find the right command. If a large-language model can tell me how to do it in 10 seconds, and - big assumption - its solution is correct, I become more productive.

I’m still cautious about relying on AI but there is definitely potential.

And why do they try to assure users that all data in the warp drive is encrypted and does not record keystrokes?

I don’t think I’d be in the market for a terminal-related cloud service. I know it’s open source but it’s just too big of a can of worms.

I’ve used this a bit - it’s pretty nice, especially if you’re working in a team. You can share “notebooks” (basically lists of commands and workspaces) with your teammates. But I wouldn’t use it personally. The fact that it makes you register with an email gave me pause during onboarding.

Yeah, that puts me off as well. It’s not available for Linux yet so I couldn’t use it regardless. Hopefully someone makes a less commercial fork at some point that doesn’t contain the online features.
