a fellow Arch user at 7.5 months HRT :3I know it’s a joke, but, for someone with the conviction to live true to themselves against all the disgust in the world out there right now, owning your own hardware and saying fuck you to corporations seems like a pretty easy choice along those lines lol.
I know this is mostly joking but I cannot tell if people really think there’s a correlation between being LGBT and using Linux. If there is one, what explains it?

I am a big fan of other theories answering the question. Yet also, both being trans and using linux come with a way of thinking where you accept to challenge the “one per default” solution, in order to find something better even if it is less comfortable at first.
So trans people are likely to use linux, BSD, (maybe Hurd) or other system that matched their needs. Because they value more the reality than the convenience. They know very well the social incentives to do as “normal people” do, but they can’t make it to lie to themselves well enough to pretend it would be ok to do as if it was ok.
At some point, most cis genders using linux are transgenders who happen to be born with some genitalia that fit their mind: their hardware got delivered with their favorite operating system, so they don’t need to install nor to set a dual boot ; but they feel so after considering different options and making their own choice.

correlation on a correlation. Autists are more likely to be computer nerds and/or trans. It could be a self fulfilling prophecy, a massive bag of small things, or just a joke from an endless chaos called universe.
I saw a thread asking why there’s so many transfems on lemmy compared to transmascs, I imagine this might be helpful:
if we take a field that is generally more popular with men than women, for a wildly exaggerated example let’s say there’s a 100:1 ratio. 100,000 men and 1,000 women.
When we factor in that 0.5% of the population is trans it turns to 250 transfems and 2.5 transmascs (using 0.25% for each)
Now ~25% of women are transfem, but only ~0.003% of men are transmasc.
(provided everyone’s transition happens after you joined lemmy, this isn’t a perfect theory.)
Or that queer people are more likely to challenge the status quo when issues arise than cishet people so changing to Linux is aken to an act of resistance. Or it’s just a trend and I could be overthinking it🤷♀️
I don’t know if there actually is one, I highly doubt it. However, there always seems to be an extremely high density of queer people at software events so… maybe there is?
Yeah I don’t know either. I’m tempted to wonder that if there is one, the common thread might be something like “people who aren’t afraid to do what’s best for themselves”.

maybe, but it’s like upwards of 40%, and out and about I usually see an openly queer person once every few months if at all

I say because I only know two people in my life who are transitioning or have transitioned, and both are Arch Linux users.

Obligatory mention that the old-school greybeard archetype still exists and I’d guess that more of those are gay than egg or hatching / hatched (UrbanDictionary is no help here, but I assume those are terms. If not, please extrapolate.)
There may also be other archetypes not predisposed to needing HRT. I’m not sure what archetype Linus himself is, for example. The distinct lack of beard means he doesn’t quite fit greybeard, and it sure looks like he’s comfortable as he is.
But it’s good to know that tech folks are now available in more stripes than the original stereotypes. It keeps the weirdy-beardies* who still live in musty wizard towers on their toes if they dare to come down.
* I look in the mirror every day. I know what I see.
I mean look, all of this is just good fun. Everything is just stereotypes and this should all be taken with a huge grain of salt. I don’t think there’s actually any correlation.

the joke is that I started using linux fairly shortly after starting HRT implying that starting my transition or being trans caused me to switch to linux
