Mostly to do with how posts are composed which was always cramped and weird in the past.
And no more mixing up normal posts with DMs.

Neat. Mostly aesthetics, but I can seen how a lot of those will help users a tonne, and IRL make the whole thing a lot more polished

I doubt they will ever add it at this point. Mastodon can display markdown on posts from Akkoma just fine so it must be that they don’t want Masto users to have access to markdown at all. Fortunately, Fediverse is more than just Mastodon so you can join an Akkoma instance instead, or one of the forks of Mastodon.

It is but Mastodon is the biggest part, by a long shot, and also one of the worst at the same time…
Yeah, and that’s my frustration with Lemmy too. Piefed has features like flairs that are just useless because 90% of people are on Lemmy that can’t even display them in any way!
It also doesn’t help that Piefed has a better discovery of communities so when a new person makes their account on here, I can’t even give them a good advice like “oh, use feeds to find communities you might like” or “there’s ‘similar communities’ menu in sidebar, glance at it from time to time!”
Instead, it’s either pointing them at lemmyverse.net or telling them to try to turn ‘all’ feed into something actually tolerable. And they have to pull it off without word filters because Lemmy doesn’t have it either!
no talk about improving integration with groups/communities or any other platforms at all :(
They are big so they don’t care. If it was Threads that had some federation problems it would be a high priority task for the developer team to fix it. But Lemmy is too small for them to care about us.

Agreed but they already have groups and Lemmy communities kind of work so they will just ignore the issues and focus on improving ✨Mastodon experience✨

Thing is though, small posts is what Mastodon is about, not massive missives. Any more than about 300 chars and I skip it anyway.Perhaps some client apps don’t do a great job of showing a small teaser when a post is long - I’ve had some negative pushback from Mastodon users when my Wordpress blog uses the ActivityPub plugin to share it’s content onto Mastodon. They talk of needing to scroll lots to get past the post, which sounds like a badly made app to me.
This is a problem with the official Mastodon app, specifically. So I would redirect those users to Phanpy or similar, which automatically collapses long posts.
